This course will introduce students to various codes of ethics with focus on the behavioral health/substance abuse code. The issue of professional boundaries will be covered in depth. Applied exercises and discussion will assist students in practicing identification of potential ethical issues, and providing client services.

Confidentiality
This course will provide information on the federal requirements of 42 CFR part 2, and HIPAA regarding client confidentiality and protection of client confidential information in behavioral health counseling. Students will discuss handling various confidential issues that may arise in the behavioral health field.

Personality Disorders & Substance Use Disorders
When we work with substance use dependent persons, we are for the most part, dealing with persons who present with personality traits that sabotage their treatment success. This course will review the characteristics of the 10 DSM-IV personality disorders and address those disorders that are statistically present in persons with chemical dependency issues. Treatment implications will be discussed as they relate to building therapeutic relationship and adjusting treatment modalities to address the course of treatment.

This course will describe the use of DSM 5 with particular emphasis on Substance-related and Addictive Disorders and other disorders most likely to co-occur with substance-related disorders (i.e., Depressive Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, and Trauma- and Stressor-related Disorders). The course will focus on diagnosis, determination of severity, and the relationship between diagnosis and treatment planning
