Community Resources Use and Case ManagementTrainees are provided with foundational and practice information on identification and use of available community resources (local, regional, statewide) for coordinating services and case management. They will be provided with general guidance on making referrals to other treatment and community-based services. Through applied exercises they will learn to identify and evaluate the appropriateness of potential resources, as well as how to help clients access them. Emphasis will be placed on creative use of various community resources and provision of case management. Procedures for appropriate exchange of information will be reviewed. |

Motivational InterviewingThis course will focus on the transtheoretical model of change developed by Prachaska and DiClemente. Students will participate in hands-on exercises for using motivational interviewing and the specific interventions at the different stages of change. |

Recovery, Health and WellnessThis course will provide information on supporting personal recovery, wellness, and balanced health using stress management techniques. The focus of the course will be on stressors (family, work, financial etc), stress, burnout, stress management, and applied exercises to help students practice developing skills associated with the maintenance of their own health and wellness. |

Psycho-PhysiologyThis course will provide information about the brain-body connection, nervous system structure, neuro-anatomy, neurotransmitter and receptor function, and drug class/classification effects. Application exercises and discussion will help the student understand the impact and importance of psychoactive substances (legal and illegal) on both the brain and the body. |

ASAM PracticeThis course will provide information regarding evaluating behavioral health disorders and issues criteria contained within the ASAM PPC-2R. Students will be provided guidance in evaluation of client risk and/or severity associated with the six ASAM Dimensions. Application exercises will use case examples for practicing and development of client placement recommendations based on what is available within the continuum of care. |

Introduction to Group CounselingThis course will provide information about the various formats of group counseling. Using the training group format, information will be presented experientially in small groups utilizing role plays and participant exercises. The major focus of the course lies in analyzing group process, organizing and leading an ongoing therapy group. |

Relapse PreventionStudents will review client centered best practice relapse prevention planning strategies and counselor interventions. The course will also examine the interrelationship of the relapse prevention plan and the mental health symptom management plan, crisis intervention, pre-relapse, and strategies of re-engagement after relapse. |

Introduction to CounselingThis course will provide information about the personal characteristics of the effective counselor, establishing a counseling relationship, and defining counselor and client roles. Through applied exercises students will be introduced to the practice of the client-centered approach, using communication skills such as listening, attending, and reflection. |

Traditional Health Based PracticesTrainees are provided with foundational information on traditional lifestyles and health practices of people living in Alaska prior to western contact. Students will be introduced to beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge of health promotion and maintenance that were practiced, and will examine the major changes leading to the current health status of the Alaska Native community. Special emphasis will be placed on potential strategies for improving behaviorally based health. |

Working with Diverse PopulationsThis course will provide information regarding working with clients of different ethnic or racial heritage, age, gender, or life style. Applied exercises will help students practice their developing skills associated with respectfully gathering information about the client’s background. |

Personality Disorders and Chemical DependencyThis course will review the characteristics of the 10 DSM-lV personality disorders and address those disorders that are statistically present in persons with chemical dependency issues. Treatment implications will be discussed as they relate to building therapeutic relationships and adjusting treatment modalities to address the course of treatment. |

Advanced Group CounselingThis training will provide suggestions of how to develop group rules and strategies to plan particular groups. The course is a combination of didactic and experiential elements. Focus is on the stages in the evolution of groups. Multicultural and ethical issues related to the group process are emphasized. A review of techniques in managing group members during particular stages along with skills to direct group members through particular situations will be practiced. |
